Movie Review

(500) Days of Summer

A girl who doesn't believe true love exists... and a boy who falls for her... this is not a love story, yet an offbeat story about love. It's about a phase in a boy's life, the first 250 days of which make his world beautiful and the next 250 makes it messy, all because of a girl, Summer Finn. That's 500 Days of Summer for you!

Tom and Summer work in the same office, get along well and eventually become great friends. Summer finds Tom interesting. She sees him, likes him but doesn't want to get into a relationship with him. However, Tom believes she is the only one in the entire universe who could make him happy. He knows anything is possible but thinks his life is worth it.

Shuttling between the first and the second half of Tom's 500 days with Summer (by numbering them for the viewer), the director glides you through the story with a non-linear screenplay which makes the well-handled script quite appealing. For instance, the scene that opens with 'Day 290' when Summer says that they should stop seeing each other, is quite contrastingly followed by 'Day 1' when Tom and Summer get acquainted with each other over their mutual love of a music album.

Even after Summer declares that nothing could happen between them, Tom finds it impossible to forget her. Though his friends want him to get over it, his undying love for Summer rather makes him get back at it and every time he tries that, she repudiates saying she's been in relationships and hasn't seen love in it and that she doesn't believe in love. 500 days... is all about how life turns out to be when people who are at such different extremities of ideologies of love come closer.

Another scene that deserves mention is when Tom goes to a party hoping to convince Summer about their relationship. The scene comes to you as a split shot, showing Tom's expectations on one side and the actual results at the party on the other. One finds it both enjoyable and pitiable as things end up differently for Tom at the party, especially the reaction he expects from Summer and what he actually gets when he presents her a book. It's classy as the scene ends with the 'reality' frame setting over the 'expectations' frame as he sees her engagement ring.

The movie also throws light on how the corporate of today influences the culture and lifestyle of society. We are subtly hinted at it when Tom, working in a greeting card company, gets fed up with his job and walks out saying, "Let's not frame words for people... let them mean it..."

Ultimately, it's the climax that is the heart of the movie. On 'Day 488', Tom and Summer meet at their favorite rendezvous point (the place is a character in itself) where they have an exchange over her decision on their 'relationship', which portrays how true love often goes underrated.

Most days don't have an impact on the course of our life except some, like the day Tom meets Summer which changes rest of his life, leaving a deep scar on his mind and heart. The climax is just awesome and so beautifully thought out and it's not the '488th Day' meeting between Tom and Summer but the actual climax comes after that. Watch it to love it!

Jewelry Fair in Hong Kong Mid 2010 Experience

Although this was an international exhibition, our relatives in jewelry business told us that it is a less crowded period and would be good for training visitors. Our relatives kindly allowed us to print our cards using their business name and address as the exhibitors needed us to submit our name cards with the registration form.

We noticed a school teacher in queue with more than 50 students from Korea. There were several visitors from India and countless from Asia and other parts of the western continents.

We waited at least one and a half hours for our turn. We noted there were traders from Hong Kong, China, India, Israel, Italy, Singapore, USA, etc. This was our first time attending a jewelry fair and we were a little concerned over our attire. We were asking each other and decided to be moderately dressed eventually. This proved to be right. Many are not particularly bothered in fact. Joyce added one or two of her jewelry items to look a little more professional and serious. Well, I only had my usual white gold necklace and a tiny blue sapphire stones pendant.

We did a fleeting walk all around. Saw that there was nothing in particular Joyce wished to acquire. We moved on to the next floor and the next. Joyce was not keen in diamonds as she loves natural semi-precious stones better. As such we decided to give the diamond hall a miss. We stopped at a dine-in kiosk for a fruit juice and sandwich to rest our legs for half an hour and carried on for another two hours and decided to come back the following day for some serious purchasing.

I love the MTR system in Hong Kong. Very easy to move around. We alighted at one of the shopping centres, had some popular noodles and pastries at one of their economical eating outlets. We did some window shopping and then returned to the hotel.

The following day, we were focused and went straight to the floor to look at the items Joyce wanted. We are Christians and before we set out, we usually pray for God's protection and wisdom. To be honest, I do not have much knowledge of these precious or semi-precious stones or metals. I only move along and kept Joyce company. The LORD kept watch over us. I only knew to hear His guidance. I am saying this because we experienced amazing events.

I carried a backpack and usually walked behind Joyce. As we passed a particular kiosk, I suddenly felt strong tingling icy cold water literally being splashed onto my legs. Well, I was wearing socks and covered shoes and long tailored pants. When Joyce stopped by in eager interest at their products, I felt the urge to tell her to be cautious. After some 15 minutes, she decided to move on. I therefore didn't tell her.

We next passed a kiosk that was marketing all the shells and pearls stocks. There were a lady and two men who sat around and talked to each other. Joyce decided to pick several strands and moved two feet away to select more from another lot. I stood with Joyce and suddenly had a nauseating reaction. God, are you indicating something to me? I didn't tell Joyce and waited. While Joyce was still picking, one of the men stood up, picked up what Joyce had selected and put them back into the pile that Joyce picked. I pointed it out to her. Joyce became agitated and asked that we move on.

Subsequently, we passed another kiosk. This time around, I felt icy cold water being splashed over my head. The chill ran down my spine. I touched my head to warm and un-numb it. I felt that I needed to move my backpack in front of me and did so. When Joyce indicated interest in the multi-coloured strands of stones, I stopped her. I told her to move on. She was puzzled and we turned a corner to the next lane. I related the past three incidences and she was quite taken aback.

Joyce gently rebuked me and reminded that I must tell her. I told her that I would stop her from committing to the purchase if I had such indications. From then on, she was put on alert, too. As soon as we finished our conversation, I told her I smelled strong burning of incense. Joyce had me look to the right and we were surprised to see a row of 3 enclosed kiosks that had assortment of religious idols and ornaments on the shelves. We looked into the glass shelves and casing but didn't see any incense burners or sticks. The queasy thing's that we were standing on the glass-encased side.

We moved to the next lane and the next. This time around, Joyce stepped into a big square kiosk made up of at least four open units. Looked like a whole island of seashells and pearls. They had 2 female and 3 male on that island. I was more alert now. I told Joyce to move on as the men looked like some devouring animals, chunky and brutal looking. Joyce said something I thought laughable. She said maybe they are fishermen. I asked her to look at their complexion and said, "Have you seen fishermen without a tan? Isn't it questionable?" We had a good laugh. That was another lesson of wisdom we were given by God. Honestly, I am not so smart!

Well, Joyce finally bought several kilos of seashells, pearls, etc. We also visited a hall that sold other accessories and gift boxes and such like.

Friends, if it is going to be your first time visiting the jewelry exhibition, we recommend that you go on the second day. We observed that the visitors need not queue for more than 15 minutes to do their registration.

Dress code: we also noted that we need not be elaborate. Be comfortable. Not many are keen to know the jewelry you put on, too. I must compliment Joyce for the effort as she looked good with her ornaments and the traders noticed her to wish to show her more of their unique designers' collection. So, if you are shopping for special pieces, you may want to do some embellishing, please.

Be cautious, anyway. Be happy and shop profitably, friends!

4 Steps To Enrich Your Entertaining Experience At Home Without Burning Your Pocket!

Here I will go through steps that I took to build up my own entertaining space at home. Notice that you don't have to take all of them, just do what you think is necessary with you and you'll be fine. OK, no more chat, we should dive straight to the point.

Step 1: Choose your place wisely

I meant it, choose your place wisely!

This first step is a very important step once you're aiming to build your own space of entertainment. It's best to take your own room as your play ground. But what if you don't have your own room? I know, it's a real problem. And I want to be honest that if you're in that situation, it's really tough to realize your dream...

A good isolated place will help you do 2 things. The first thing is to avoid disturbing others. And the other thing is to make you feel more relaxed. Why? Because you're the king/queen of your place!

Step 2: Choose your vehicles of entertainment wisely

What I mean by saying that?

I mean not everybody is hardcore FPS gamers. Not everybody likes hard rock from Linkin Park. And not everybody likes watching block-buster movies. They just like 'epic stuff' from the 80's.

You got me?

Every single person has his/her own passion. And they entertain themselves in different ways. That's why they choose different things when it comes to entertaining and relaxation.

If you're a gamer (like me), games would be your best match. FPS, strategy games, simulating games, online RPG, etc. You're a big fan of Linkin Park? Then it's time to rock! Where's your CDs? If you prefer watching movies, then go shopping and take home some block-busters!

Step 3: Choose your partners wisely

OK, this is not a 'must have,' but I think the party will be funnier if you have friends. Am I right?

If you're watching a football match, isn't it more funnier when you have a group of close friends watching it with you? If you're playing games, team games like Warcraft or Starcraft, wouldn't you be more confident when you're fighting alongside with your partners?

Believe me, this step is not a must, but if you can, give it a try. I swear it will be a real explosion!

Step 4: Choose your 'gears' wisely

Because they contribute hugely to your entertaining experience. And because they can burn your pocket without your notice!

OK, so what makes a good gear?

In my opinion, the biggest part of a home entertaining system is its sound system! Don't believe me? Then try creating some FPS games without your sound system!

You can have the best PC on the world, the best Internet connection, the best room to place them on, and the best partners around you. But if you don't have a decent speaker, it's not entertainment anymore!

And if I have one suggestion for you today, I would suggest you to take a look at my favorite speaker system. The M-Audio Studiophile AV 40. It's a widely known brand name, and it has been chosen by many. But before you taking out your hard-earned money to buy it, I suggest you look at my M-Audio Studiophile AV40 Review at http://www.squidoo.com/m-audio-studiophile-av40-review

It will help you make the final decision the best way! There's no point to go broke first, right?

A Special Tip for a Good American Accent for Actors

For the past 11 years of teaching the American Dialect in Australia, what really caught my attention as a big mistake most people make across the board, is that they mean to give the accent a particular 'voice'.

Most of them come to think that American accent is something that requires a nasal twang to it, something which is very bright and chirpy. Something similar to accent of Desperate Housewives or Tom Cruise and the like. Versions of that accent apparently exist but it is a bit hasty to think that is the extent of the American accent.

It is a natural train of thought - we think of an accent and we fit it with a tonal quality, a particular register in pitch and a character. I'm even guilty of it myself. When I do an English accent my mind automatically pulls up a throaty, deep smooth sound.

Why this can become a real issue? Simply because it is not authentic to you. And not only is it not authentic, you are now also not capable to sort out your character with a clean slate. You have already pigeon-holed it. But you can always try approaching your character in its wholeness and don't give the accent the character before you've even started. If after doing some work on your character, you find out that the character DOES need a twangy, nasal American accent then that's a go-signal for you. Go for it. But you know that you came to it from a rounded point of view.

On the other hand, if you find yourself on set working with a new accent, here are few tips you should definitely consider:

1.Tongue and Lips Exercise. You should roll your tongue and lips in between each take to help keep those muscles relaxed because once they start to fatigue- and they will- it's hard to get them back.

2. Know what to look for in yourself.are the sounds becoming more difficult to navigate in the mouth? Is your tongue getting thick? Are you stumbling over sounds that were easy earlier on? These signs means you are worn out. It is advised you take a 5-minute break, if it's possible, and take in something that will bring your blood sugar back up.

But if you don't, you'll continue having the endless takes because your accent isn't that solid. As your exhaustion continues, your accent will most likely continue to decrease in quality. So without a recharge or even the awareness that you need one, you're essentially shooting yourself in the foot.

Now, the next topic will tackle about using the right tone depending on WHO your audience will be, which is dependent on what 'version' of the accent you use. The natural and not forced sounds is one approach in teaching that I prefer but that may not read well to some audiences. There are a number of audiences (ironically not American) that may think that the actor's accent is appalling, barely noticeable at all.

And if you're one actor that is working for an American audience, however, it'd be just fine. Like you, your audience may have a pre-conceived notion of what the accent should sound like. So, know your audience and the expectations they have from your accent.

Keeping Precious Pieces Of Art Pristine

You can canvas the same museum year after year and look upon the same exhibits and find them in mint condition. Do you ever wonder why museum pieces never age or wither away? Museum pieces stay in tiptop shape due to the work of the museum conservator. This is a significant profession in the art world.

Museum conservators are responsible for the care and preservation of museum artifacts. They achieve this by using special techniques and processes to assess the condition of the artifact, identify evidence of deterioration, conduct conservation treatments, and implement strategies to prevent further damage.

An extensive and broad-based art education is essential for the museum conservator to carry out his or her job responsibilities. Conservators should have a healthy background in archaeology, art history, and anthropology. Art education is a practical resource that aids in research projects, identifying artistic and historic art methods used on an artifact as well as aiding in assessing the effectiveness of materials, fabrics, and procedures used during the conservation process.

A solid background in science is also required for this profession. General and organic chemistry in particular is useful to the museum conservator. Science helps to determine the chemical, biological, and physical factors that cause works of art to deteriorate. Also, science skills are useful to help develop a treatment plan to restore a damaged object to its previous or assumed appearance.

Conservators typically specialize in a particular material or group of objects. Some work only with paintings, textiles, books, photographs, and sculptures. There are others who deal only with artifacts from a particular group like natural science, archaeology, or architecture. Museum Conservators are not just limited to the museum environment. Those of this nature work in a variety of environments including heritage institutions, libraries, universities, government agencies, and private conservation enterprises.

The graduate education has become the more recognized route into this profession. Graduate degree programs generally require two to four years of study. Many graduate programs require the fulfillment of academic prerequisites, including courses in chemistry, the humanities, and studio art. Check with your intended university for specific requirement details.

In addition to coursework, candidates for graduate programs are strongly encouraged to have had some conservation experience. Internships, volunteer work, and apprenticeships are all considered appropriate professional experience. Involvement in supervised collection care projects such as collection assessments, re-housing, and exhibition design as well as examination and treatment of individual artifacts is encouraged.

Museum conservators keep museums, and other facilities, filled with precious artifacts for the world to enjoy. It is a coveted profession that only a small percentage of people can truly master. This profession is so unique that only three education institutions in the US offer graduate programs to all areas of art conservation. If you have a background in art and are considering a Master's degree, check and see if you qualify for this prestigious degree program, perhaps even through online college. Do your own research on the Internet to find out more information.

Three Wonderful Alice in Wonderland Fancy Dress Costume Ideas

Alice in Wonderland is another one of those incredible stories that has been truly brought to a new generation of children by the recent movies by Tim Burton. An Alice fancy dress costume is a great treat for girls and women alike, and is something that you can share with your daughter.

Not to mention all the other amazing Alice in Wonderland costumes that you can choose from. If you dress up as any one of these timeless characters you can truly stand out at any fancy dress party as one of the most recognisable characters there. And it's very likely that your whole evening will take on a magical mood. Here are some great ideas you might want to try out:

1. Child's Alice costume
The image of innocence and prettiness, and child's Alice costume is a wonderful one, allowing your child to escape into a fantasy land and imagine she is going down the rabbit hole.

Any good Alice costume for a child must have the sky-blue dress with frilly white front and shoulders. With white stockings or socks and little black shoes. And of course the finishing touch - a black hair ribbon.

2. Adult Alice costume
An adult Alice fancy dress costume can have a little more to it, you can play around with the traditional Alice image and make it a lot sexier if you please. And there are many sexy Alice costumes out there to choose from. The most important thing is that it is recognizably Alice, with the blue and white colour-scheme.

But of course the rest is flexible. You can have a short, lacy skirt, or sexy white stockings, or even garters. With high-heeled black shoes. And of course a little black ribbon to finish the image.

3. Queen of Hearts costume
The true star of Tim Burton's new Alice in Wonderland movie was for many the Queen of Hearts, who wore an incredible costume of magnificent extravagance.

As with the Alice costume you can wear it impressive and regal, or small and sexy. Red and white, hearts everywhere, and of course plenty of black lace to boot. Black stockings with red leg ribbons are very popular and a black queen's hat to top it off.

And a big part of the character is really enjoying yourself - the whole idea of Alice in Wonderland is a complete escape to a magical world where none of the normal rules apply. So you can't become an Alice walking around with a serious expression on your face!

Avatar Exhibit at Seattle's Science Fiction Museum

The latest exhibit to hit the Science Fiction Museum portion of Seattle's EMP/SFM is an Avatar exhibit which takes over the entire portion of the SciFi museum. Before you even pass through the doors of the museum, you can feel yourself being transported to Pandora. You'll get a chance to have your picture taken with the jellyfish-type woodsprites in a computer-generated scene from Pandora. The sprites will even converge on your shadow.

Then, step through the doors, and find yourself in a recreation of the human laboratories on the planet surface. There you will find samples of plant life and get to play with touchscreen technology similar to those used by characters in the movie.

Further into the exhibit you'll get to see the big draw; a full scale version of the AMP suit. I have to admit, that's probably my favourite part of the exhibit. There's even a user manual for the AMP suit, although it's really a manual to put together the prop suit. What I'd do to get my hands on that!

Other displays include a full-size arrow as used by Neytiri and several full size heads of some of the Nav'i characters. Want to try on some Nav'i boots? You'll get to do that as well.

But unlike most movies, the draw for Avatar is as much about the making of the movie as the movie itself, and you will find a lot of interesting displays that will show you how the movie was made. One display shows the dot placement that computers would use to graft on Sam Worthington's Nav'i face, as well as the suit with more markers and the camera rig he wore so that they could use the actor's real facial expressions. Step a few feet back from the display and you'll see the shadow of Sully's avatar, and get an idea of just how much they had to biggie size the actor. Later on in the exhibit you'll see clips of the actors having to perform with the technology and no real set to speak of, next to the finished shot of the actors as Nav'i on Pandora.

Another popular part of the exhibit involves visitors stepping into an area where their body is then scanned by computers and they are turned into a Nav'i onscreen. Other displays let you use similar technology that James Cameron used to film within the virtual environment of Pandora, panning a tablet-like device to get the shots you need.

Overall, it's a fun exhibit and is really great for Avatar fans. But it isn't a very big exhibit, and yet it takes up the entire portion of the Science Fiction Museum, although no doubt, it is probably due to to the overall complexity of the exhibit. For those that have visited the museum before and were looking forward to seeing model ships, Captain Kirk's chair, or the robot display, you're going to be sorely disappointed.

The Battlestar Galactica exhibit is still going on, elsewhere in the museum, so if you haven't yet seen the BSG exhibit, then getting to see both exhibits is definitely a lot of fun. But if, like me, you're a local that has already seen the BSG exhibit and knows what else the museum typically carries, you may come away from the Avatar exhibit feeling slightly underwhelmed.

Washi Tape: A Brief History

So, just what is a washi tape, anyway? It is a decorative tape made out of rice paper. It comes in a plethora of colors and many different designs. It is commonly used in art and craft projects, specifically paper crafts. It is a staple scrapbooking embellishment.

Washi Tape, or Japanese masking tape, first originated in Japan by the company Kamoi Kakoshi Co., Ltd. under the name MT masking tape. It all started in 2006 when puzzled Kamoi received an email from a small group of women who created a book using their industrial masking tape. The email stated that they would like to tour their facility before working on a second book using their masking tapes. Confused Kamoi did not initially respond to this curious email, and later received a package from the women; It contained colorful, beautifully designed pages all done in masking tape! Kamoi eventually agreed to let the women tour their facility, and their marvel and fascination at the tape making process filled Kamoi with great pride. Later, they received a second book filled with more beautiful pages from 17 different artists, all using their masking tape to create a thing of beauty! The women requested that Kamoi create more masking tape colors. Kamoi did not hesitate after a big art exhibition in Tokyo and lots of media coverage; they took the plunge and began to work on creating the perfect rolls to use for crafts and design! They not only created many more colors, but also designs that were cute and functional.

Did you know that creating the perfect hue of washi tape is a difficult process? Because of the consistency of the rice paper, creating the ideal color, especially light colors, is hard to produce because it's easy to get a dull hue. It was a long and arduous process, but eventually Kamoi created washi tapes in colors that resembled flowers in a field. They called it mt, because, well, that's what everyone in the company referred to it as! They decided to give the colors traditional, archaic Japanese names and chose packaging that would be aesthetically pleasing. Thus, washi tape was born! It is loved and cherished by many in the arts and crafts community as a staple in the creative paper craft process.

Today, there are even more manufacturers of this cute craft tape. Kamoi might have been the first, but they paved the way for companies like Classiky and MARK's who have helped in the development of the decorative tape revolution.

Kawaii Tape has a huge selection of washi tape, cute decorative tape, pretty packing tape, and mini deco sets. Check it out today and find your perfect roll!

Car-Less Places: Oaklavia

Oakland, California - At 10 A.M. another "Ciclavia" session began. Oaklavia, as it is called in this instance, is a special metropolitan area in which a formerly car-dominated downtown district is temporarily transformed into blocks of wide open space where even toddlers play safely in the middle of the street.
Ciclavias have occurred in other cities such as New York and elsewhere. This is one of the first to happen in Oakland.

My wife and I have lived our whole lives in Oakland but we've never experienced it without cars in the streets, so we decided to check it out.

The car-less spaces weren't quite contiguous but the police and the event volunteers ensured that cyclists and pedestrians didn't wait long, or at all, to move between each car-less segment.

To be honest, even with police blocking oncoming traffic, it was still tough to relax in the middle of the street. Seeing a mother and child in the roadway was truly surreal. No fear of imminent death in these two: just joy at being out on a Sunday in a wide-open space.

Once the lack of car noise and the abundance of space set in, it truly was liberating and incredibly stimulating. Events like this and cycling in general flood you with so much more detail about your surroundings than you would normally get. Being in a steel and glass enclosure moving at high velocity (aka a car) robs you of so many parts of a place.

The smells of all the food alone made the trip worthwhile: like those from an outdoor cafe setup in the street in front of Ratto's Market & Deli, not to mention the Oaklavia barbecue.

Moving through downtown this way, you just plain notice things you didn't know were there. My wife (the gardener) found a little garden half of a block down from the city jail, with a nice view of the Federal Building in the background. Who knew? How would you know given that this one-lane boulevard (aka freeway) is what the garden sits along. Today, without the fear of imminent death by car, we could literally stop and smell the roses, or at least the tomatoes. Yum!

While we were investigating the garden, we met an event volunteer. His sweet cargo bike can haul up to 600 lbs. and cost $1,100. That's more than my friend Randall can haul on his Bilenky. Awesome.

All in all, Oaklavia was a huge success in giving people such great new perspectives and experiences on their city. Now, if this kind of car-less open space could just be made pervasive and permanent.

The cyclavia website specifies that these temporary spaces are purely for recreation. This essentially turns streets into a temporary park. This is a wonderful thing. However, removing cars from a business district like this is reminiscent of another type of space that has a more lasting and possibly more profound impact on one's life: the plaza.

Europe is full of these plazas, piazzas, and platzs, i.e. massive car-less spaces where people gather, not just on weekends but everyday, e.g. Trafalgar Square, St. Peter's Square, Marienplatz, etc. In these places, you feel safe from cars not just while you recreate but while you work, dine, shop, run errands, etc. In other words, you feel safe from cars virtually all the time. Living life without the fear of imminent death by car is a refreshing if not a profound shift in your mind's focus. Suddenly, brainpower currently spent on parking, driving, and dodging cars is available to ponder other things. Ponder the possibilities of that.

Europe is not necessarily more enlightened about public spaces. They've got their share of car-obsession, -dominance, and -congestion. These plazas are simply legacy spaces left over from the pre-car era. Since much of the U.S. was designed and built during the car-obsessed 20th century, we have relatively few car-less places. "Drive-through" everything seems to be our legacy in many cities. Fortunately, many in the U.S. feel this needs to change.

The sponsors of Oaklavia, for example, Walk Oakland, Bike Oakland are working hard to diversify our streets from cars. Another site representing proponents of this idea is the Livable Streets Initiative. There are, of course, many more. Nevertheless, as illustrated in Vegas, there's a lot more to do.

Regardless, Oaklavia did an excellent job of showing how rewarding this vision can be: for a few hours if not forever.

Killing People for a Living

That's what I do, and when I make that statement I tend to get noticed. But it's not as bad as it sounds, really. All we do is to perform murder mysteries in hotels in the UK.

It is a live, interactive performance and we mingle with the guests through out the evening or even for a whole weekend! Naturally, this type of intimate one-on-one performance is not without it's risks as the audience can react in a totally unexpected way, but not many performers can honestly say they get to know their audience in the way that Murder Mystery actors do.

The trouble is of course, that the guests can be loose cannons. Most times though it can result in an immensely humorous incident that we talk about again and again.

There was a famous incident at the Plough and Harrow in Birmingham. A middle age lady came up to me and she clearly had no idea what was going on. The amount of alcohol she had consumed had done little to assist her either. She asked me who the characters were and I explained. SHe asked me what had happened and I explained. I told her that one of the characters, Trinny, had returned from a trip in Europe, expecting to marry Paul. Only Paul had married Eve. My character had returned from the European trip with Trinny and as I explained to my inebriated guest that Trinny was expecting to marry Paul and all the way back form Italy she had talked about little else.

The woman took on a very puzzled expression and looked at me straight in the face and asked "So, who's Little Else?"

Murder mysteries are a lot of fun but for an actor, it is a completely different discipline to stage, television or film work. The most important thing is that an actor must - at all times - stay in character. It is our golden rule, our prime directive, our mantra. Apart from that the acting must be done in a different way too. For instance - let's suppose there is a big scene to be performed.

Let's set the scene. You are playing a character called Mary (if you are a bloke, just pick up on the major points - you'll get the gist.). You have just discovered a love letter from another woman to your husband. You are outraged. You confront your husband with this information. You rush over to him waving the love letter under his nose and shout, "Is this true?" "Who is she, how long has it been going on?" You break down in tears; you plead, you cry, you wail and you turn out a magnificent performance that should have the whole audience reaching for their tissues.

Except you've done it all wrong.

Oh there was nothing wrong with your acting: - in fact it was excellent but the problem is that with murder mysteries the audience isn't still, it isn't quiet and it isn't always facing you. We have to perform our major scenes another way.

Right - Take 2

You have seen a love letter from another woman to your husband. You are outraged. You want to confront your husband with this information. You ensure that your husband is the other side of the room before shouting "John, John is this true?" You DO NOT rush over to him but your argument should be conducted right across the room. He will shout back at you and you can continue "Who is she, how long has it been going on?" You break down in tears; you plead, you cry, you wail and you turn out a magnificent performance that will have the whole audience reaching for their tissues.

The act of projecting the arguments and interactions across the room has several effects. It forces the actor to be louder. It attracts the attention of the audience throughout the room. It means you do not have your back to the vast majority of the guests. It makes it easier for the other actors to realise what is happening so they can try to get the guests on their table to listen.

The majority of guests at a murder mystery do not realise the planning and work that goes into their entertainment, but the basics of acting and performing in a room full of people are simple. Be loud - Do it across the room and make sure you have everyone's attention.

Caramelized Fennel And Onions Simple Recipe

Enjoy Some Delicious Fennel Flair with this Italian Fare.

Fennel, long having been a staple in Italian cooking, gracing many a meatball or link of sausage with it's distinct aromatic flair and rich but subtle taste, pairs beautifully with it's Italian compatriot, onion. Together they make for the foundation of a symphony of flavors, including other classic Italian standbys such as Parmesan Romano, olive oil, and some fresh chopped parsley. With all of these delicious flavors together, you might be tempted to think that this was, in fact, a main dish. Well, not necessarily so, though the below featured Caramelized Fennel And Onions Simple Recipe can definitely stand on it's own as a wonderful source of rich flavor, and it definitely commands it's own presence at the master's table.

Ingredients:

* 2 large onions, sliced into long, 1/4" wide strips
* 2 large fennel bulbs, sliced into medium long, 1/4" wide strips
* 1 tbsp butter, melted
* 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
* 2 tsp sea salt (or to taste)
* 1/4 cup Parmesan Romano, grated
* 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
* 2 tsp juice of lemon
* 1 tsp zest of lemon

Procedure:

1. Add oil and butter to a uncovered large pan and heat on medium high heat.
2. Add onions and fennel, stirring to coat with butter and oil.
3. Cook 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
4. Sprinkle sea salt over onions and fennel to taste.
5. Reduce heat to medium and continue to gently saute, causing the juices to caramelize, starting the caramelization process. Add a tbsp of water as need to keep ingredients from drying out.
6. Stir occasionally, scraping any caramelized dregs from the pan bottom. This step intensifies the flavor.
7. Further cook onion/fennel mixture between 30 minutes and an hour, taking note to only cook until mixture is at desired degree of caramelization. (Taste test periodically to be sure.) Also take care not to over-brown.
8. When done, immediately remove mixture from heat.
9. To serve, toss with remaining ingredients. Add additional lemon juice to taste. (Like the caramelizing process, be sure not to overdo it.)

Tips:

The above Caramelized Fennel And Onions Simple Recipe captures the essence of what is wonderful about Italian cuisine. Simple flavors complimenting each other, supporting each other, coming together to make a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Perhaps this approach is why Italian cuisine conjures up warm feelings of family being close by. Try this recipe and see if your own family agrees. Enjoy!

Clay Beads - Making A Bracelet

Once many people have purchased their clay beads they are unsure about what to do next. Most people want to make a piece of jewelry but they my not know how to get started. In this article I want to show you how to make a bracelet. This is one of the more simple places to start and will be a great way for you to begin your journey in this new hobby.

1. Make a plan.- The first thing you need to do is plan out the plan for what you want your bracelet to look like. You need to think about the purpose your jewelry will serve. Will it be casual, professional, or formal? You need to decide what type of material you will use for the wire. Will it be metal, plastic, or leather? You need to decide what types of clay beads you will use. This will include thinking about color and also what pattern you will put them in. You also need to decide if you are going to add charms of any kind onto your bracelet. This is a necessary yet fun part of the process as you get to dream big about what could be.

2. Work the plan.- Now that you have a plan you need to get to work. You first need to measure the wire you chose and cut it to the right lenght. Then you want to either put a clamp on one end or tie a knot of some kind. This will keep your beads from falling off. Now you can start adding your beads in the pattern that you chose. lso, do not forget to add your charms in the right place if you chose to use those.

3. Evaluate and then add the finishing touches.- Now you need to look at your bracelet and decide if you are happy with it. Did the pattern you put your clay beads in turn out as you had hoped? Did the charm work out well? Will your bracelet fit and serve the purpose that you made it for? If you are happy with all these things then you can add the clasps and you are finished. There are many kinds of clasps and knots that you can use. If you are not familiar with these then I encourage you to look online for video tutorials on how to use each of these or go to your local beading store and see if their are classes that you can take. This is process is not difficult but there are more details and options than can be mentioned here.

Now you are finished. You have taken your beads and made a work of art. I hope this article has been helpful and that you have enjoyed the process. Keep up the good work and enjoy being a part of the jewelry making world.

Writers and Artists: Don't Lose Your Worth

There's a move happening in the world of arts and entertainment, particularly in the realm of the book industry. I might be partial in picking the "particular" part, given that I am a novelist and a poet with a passion for literature, but I believe my point can ring true in the world of arts in general.

Stay with me.

I hear tell that the book industry is in a state of emergency, and has been for years. Apparently, people aren't reading as much as they used to. E-book sales are climbing, but as digital books are usually cheaper to purchase than printed books, some publishers feel that books are not being sold for what they are truly worth. Physical bookstores are struggling to stay in business while more readers are opting for the convenience and lower cost of e-books. Borders filed for bankruptcy; Barnes & Noble is up for sale. Publishers are laying off employees and aren't willing to take as many chances on new authors, making it more difficult for authors to get their work out there. As a result, there's an "indie revolution" happening, as independent authors who have been rejected by traditional publishers are taking it upon themselves to find other means of publication, like subsidy and self-publishing.

I'm an indie author myself (wow-I guess I am, technically) and I've picked up on the disgruntled and determined tone floating through the corner of the indie universe that I've tapped into. "Traditional publishers are the uppity enemy and we don't need 'em! They can go under if they want to! We have a voice, and we're finding our own ways to get things done." Yet, in all of the buzz and words of doom circulating throughout the industry, there's something valuable that is in danger of being lost, if publishers and authors are not careful.

You see, what bothers me the most is the notion that people aren't "reading" anymore, as if there is no longer a desire to read within society. I believe that authors must take into account that while there may be increasing methods for people to acquire the information that they want and need, people are still going to go after the information, ultimately. There was a time when no one had the option of listening to the radio, turning on the television, going to the movies, or browsing the Internet, as that kind of technology wasn't around yet, before books. So, yes, someone today may choose the option of taking a few hours of his time to watch a documentary instead of using those hours to read a book on the same subject, but the detail to be seen here is that the hunger for information is still there, regardless of the form that the information comes in. Humankind searches for knowledge; humankind searches for entertainment. That's what humans do. But when humans turn on their televisions or click on their e-readers, what kind of content are they being provided with?

Of course publishers and booksellers must take a look at how they do business and the methods that they use as the tide in the industry changes, but in the midst of all that, they should pause to ask themselves, "Wait, what are we really trying to do here? What are we looking to produce?" They have to think about their consumers, as the people who are buying books don't mean to merely buy them. They mean to read them. Consumers are after the content contained in what they are purchasing. If publishers get into the habit of putting out loads of flashy or fad-driven but poor quality product, with the meager intent of making quick sales, then their plans will backfire. It's not that people no longer desire to read, but they do desire literature that is, in fact, worth reading. Though it may sometimes take a while for consumers to catch on, they eventually realize when they are being presented with product that wasn't thoughtfully produced, and they will consequently stop buying so much of it.

Now, I am not against fads or what may be highly popular to audiences at a given time. We are human beings, and every so often, we need something fresh, catchy, and exciting to spark our interest. Keeping up with fads is all fine and dandy, but when fads fizzle out, as they inevitably do, people are still going to long for what is timeless. Matters that remain true to the human condition throughout generations will never get old. When it comes to literature, humankind will always long for a well-told love story, as love never goes out of style. Humankind will always long for accounts about conquering fears or triumphing over enemies; about the sorrow resulting from death and the joy resulting from birth; about degeneracy and righteousness, peril and pain, purpose and hope. Someone needs to provide humankind with these accounts, attentively and intelligently.

The world of arts and entertainment is in danger of losing the vital core in the essence of art if artists fail to view themselves as servants.

Yes, an artist creates because creativity is in his blood, and even if he has no audience but himself, the artist will create anyway, because something internal tells him that he has to. Yes, an artist creates for himself and naturally learns how to cater to himself, enjoying his art as an artist should, but when his art is published or otherwise produced for more people to see, the artist's motives cannot remain self-serving. That artist has now brought his work out before humanity, and if that artist has any true character, he will consider the needs of the people he is presenting his work to.

Publishers, booksellers, businesses overall, and artists would do well to see themselves as servants of the people they, well, serve-not only figuring out how to get people to buy, buy, buy, but seriously asking themselves, "How can we be of help to society, to humankind?" Indeed, people often need a good laugh to brighten up their lives, and filmmakers who want to be excellent servants won't carelessly subject their audiences to haphazard film editing in order to just push on ahead to the movie's punch lines. Otherwise, the art of filmmaking is lost. People often need stirring novels to remind them of the incalculable value of life, so publishers and writers who want to be excellent servants won't indifferently subject their readers to uninspired filler-content in order to get to the book's "good parts." Otherwise, the art in literature is lost.

Artists needn't be so busy scrambling to produce what they think will sell that they fail to respect the actual human beings who will be affected by the products. Audiences are more than screaming fans or faceless wallets; they are hearts, minds, and lives. Those hearts, minds, and lives will, in due course, recognize it when what they are being served is nonsense, something with no significant value to humanity. I would even encourage us indie writers and artists not to get so caught up trying to put the uppity "powers that be" to shame or to get so lost in the hype of fads that we lose the essence of our art, dishonoring our audiences as well as the truth of our own genius because we are not thoughtful about the quality and benefit of what we create.

We don't want to lose our worth, the worth found in our brilliance and in the significance of what we produce for the world, and in order for us to be truly great artists, we must be servants of all.

Clay Beads - What Kinds Are There?

Clay beads in themselves are a subcategory of beads. But did you know that there are even more subcategories of these unique kinds of beads? In this article I want to show you just some the ways you can categorize these little works of art in the hopes of making your shopping and beading experience a little easier.

When you first begin this hobby you need to build a framework in your mind so you have a better idea of what you need to buy and how you need to plan what you will create. Knowing the way things are categorized is a great step in this process. When it comes to clay beads there are many categories but there are three basic ones.

1. Color- When it comes to any type of beads this is usually the first way things are categorized. This is also the way that I like to organize things in my personal inventory. It makes it easier for me to visually see what I have and get an idea of what it is that I want to make.

2. Shape- When you think about these little handcrafted works of art you may not have given much though to their shape. But each little bead has a unique shape to it and these shapes can help you categorize your personal inventory. This is a great way to visually see what you have, much like organizing things by color, but also having things organized by shape gives you an extra subcategory as you plan your patterns and styles. Using different shapes can give your jewelry and extra added flare and having things organized by shape will make your work go quicker and easier.

3. Texture- Clay beads have unique textures. The two main textures are smooth and rough. Smooth versions of these beads have that traditional, finished ceramic look. The rough ones look more like a natural stone. Both of them are beautiful though and can make wonderful jewelry when used in the right situation.

As you begin this new hobby you will realize there is a lot going on and a lot to learn. Your inventory will grow quickly and you will want to stay organized so you can fully enjoy this new hobby. If you do not get organized then this hobby will not be nearly enjoyable as it could be. Hopefully these categories will help you as you begin the organization process.

One Of Many Great Northern British Artists

British contemporary art started during the 1960's and is present until now, this birthed the era of many Great Northern British Artists. This movement saw a large shift in wealth for the nation, and the common individuals power to spend increased. During around this time was an Artist named Lowry. Known for his modern urban landscapes, Lowry became known in Britain as a great artist.

Lowry was raised in the streets of northern England, Lancaster. His father Robert was an estate agent and his mother Elizabeth, who showed disinterest for his talent as an artist, was a concert pianist.

At school he was shy and made few friends and did not have great academic achievements. He devoted most of his time doing sketches and paintings. He had a habit of using whatever was with him in order to make an artwork of the place around him. He left school and engaged himself for some private art lessons during dusk on traditional and freehand drawing.

Lowry was persistent in continuing to learn from the French Impressionist artist Pierre Adolphe Valet and was lucky enough to have an outstanding and well respected teacher who encouraged him to find his own distinctive style. Later he developed his interest on industrial landscapes and began to create his style.

During interviews conducted later in his life, Lowery retained that he had an unmemorable childhood. His mother had a hard time giving birth to him and was uneasy looking at him because she longed for a daughter, jealous of her sister Mary, who had three daughters. She used her illness to get attention and controlled her son's life. She became an imperative figure in Lowry s life and when she became bedridden, he took care of her until her death in 1939.

In later years, Lowry regrets that he had received little gratitude as an artist. During the time of war, he enlisted as fire watcher in Manchester and became a legitimate war artist. During the coronation of Elizabeth II, he was appointed as Official Artist in 1953. He was selected to the Order of the British Empire as Officer and Commander which he both turned down. He seems to grasp the record of most honors wilted following the refusal of a knighthood and appointment to the Order of the Companions of Honor. He was given an honorary award degree of Master of Arts by the University of Manchester, and that of Doctor of Letters in 1961.

He succumbed to pneumonia at the age of 88 at the Woods Hospital in Glossop Derbyshire on February 23, 1976. He was buried in Charlton Southern Cemetery in Manchester. He left a cultural legacy of greatness, with his works inspiring other artists and works of art.

A collection of Lowry's work known as 'The Lowry' consisting of 55 paintings and 278 drawings are on permanent public display in a contemporary built art gallery in Salford Quays. In 1968, one of his paintings called Coming Out of School which depicts great artists was made a stamp by the Post Office.

How About Leaning the Tower of Pisa on Your Wall?

There possibly could not be a human being on earth who doesn't like the idea of travel. Travel always brings to mind great scenery, exotic locales, undiscovered destinations, blue waters, the great skyline and so many other different things to different people.

Whatever location you choose to visit, you can be sure that you will be able to pick up something related to that destination. This includes a gamut of things like photographs, travel wallpapers, shells, calendars, diaries, mementos and many other such memorabilia. How can a trip to a place be complete without an album? You will want something to remember the great times you had there. So it doesn't come as a surprise that there are so many people who are in the business of selling travel wallpapers.

If you ever think of Italy, the first thing that comes to mind most of the time is the leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy. Apart from being a part of every traveler's wish list, the leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy is also something that is an architectural marvel. So what exactly is the leaning Tower of Pisa? This is nothing, but a bell tower that is freestanding and symbolic as the Cathedral of this beautiful Italian city quite Pisa. This monument is situated right behind the cathedral. At the height of almost 55 m from the ground, the walls are at least 13 feet wide at the base and keep taping and has to go right up to the top you'll be able to find that they measure just about 2 feet in width. If you need to go right to the top, you will need to be mentally prepared to climb almost over and 90+ steps. So the Leaning Tower of Pisa is definitely not for the weak hearted and for those who do not like a rush of adrenaline. I would suggest though that you do make the effort and climb up. the view is priceless!

Since this is denoted as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, it needs to be mentioned what the angle of inclination is, without which this whole article would be incomplete. The angle was almost 5/2° some years ago, but corrective action has been taken now, which has bought the incline to about 4° right now.

If you are missing a collection of the Leaning Tower of Pisa travel wallpapers, it is not high time you added that to your repertoire?

They are also unique because they breathe air just like the animals on land. This is the reason why they often come to the surface of the water as they need to breathe air using their blowhole at the top of their head. This is their way to get air and when they go deep into the water, the muscles around the blowhole closes, so as not to let water enter the lungs. What is really amazing about them is that, they can sleep with half of their brain still awake. This is their way of keeping half conscious so they can keep afloat and breathe. Also, when they swim deep into the ocean, their heart rate slows down. This allows their body to compensate and provide more oxygen to the vital organs so that they'll be able to survive while they are at the bottom.

Sexuality in Art and Music

In ancient times, and in various cultures, the human body and making love was admired and encouraged and was shown through paintings, sculptures, or ceramics. The genitals would often be publicly shown or would even be considerably exaggerated. The extent of the genitalia was declared a symbol of amorous authority or power in man.

Clearly, sex and eroticism are two different things. Eroticism can just be expressed by a human being. Unlike human beings, animals are incapable of producing sensual behaviors.

Art may be classified in the sexy genre if it gives off a sensual appetite or pleasure. Sensual art can be displayed in paintings, sculptures, literature, songs, etc.

In sensual art we discover not solely bodily enjoyment, like we find in physical sex, yet we additionally detect satisfaction in our other senses and in other manners such as visual, audio, and as well as through our imagination.

When sex is shown through some kind of art it can become not solely the pursuit of physical pleasure but also an adoration of beauty and aesthetics. Erotic literature is a specific genre where the subject matter is entirely linked to sex in general. Very explicit scenes and words can be found that could just about be declared to be adult literature. In the genre of sensual literature we may find short stories, manuals, poems, and novels. Ancient erotic literature is characterized by its union of heavenly and earthly beings.

The Kama Sutra, penned in the fourth century in India, is considered to be the most influential manual of sexuality. It was composed as a religious book, marked to the people, and contained writings of love making techniques and advice.

In today's time, artists who design erotic art are still not, even yet, approved in society as those of other genres are.

In songs, the genre of eroticism, or sex music, has not yet been totally investigated or experimented. Though in other cultures, like in literature, artists have composed music which has embodied spirituality with sexuality.

There are various styles in contemporary music that express sexual and erotic feelings. In electronic and experimental music we can find various sub-genres that can carry an erotic denotation.

Several contemporary styles of sex songs nowadays have rhythms that were originally borrowed from the jungle cultures of Africa. We may now find several mixtures of various music styles from all over the globe which involve the use of ethnic and native instruments. World music is a sure example of the union of art through culture.

Though it has gone through several ups and downs and prohibitions, sex has continually been seen in art since the existence of man and is still a very essential artistic and human form of expression.

One of the most imperative ingredients for preparing a sensual atmosphere that may help build a passionate and erotic spice and will hike up heaps of eroticism to your lovemaking life is by using and listening to sex music. You can get more advice about this topic at http://www.sexmusicx.com/

Special Needs Children Don't Always Come First

Medicaid and the Reality of special needs dentistry

A more in-depth look at a recent report and other data.

In case you didn't already know it, being poor can cost you in more than dollars; and having special needs can cost you even more.

In a new study released by the journal Pediatrics, kids on Medicaid were reportedly 38 times more likely to be denied an appointment by any dentist, but were also 18 times more likely to be rejected by dentist offices who said they accepted Medicaid and other public forms of insurance.

This snapshot validates prior studies about the overall disparity between those on Medicaid and those with private insurance who are looking for care. As this news article from the LA Times pointed out, though, the difficulties of children with special needs finding coverage is a verified issue as well.

How Medicaid impacts special needs children

I'll share a little secret with you. My guys are on Medicaid. I don't need a study to tell me something I have already witnessed over the years. After years of having great insurance with my husband's former employer, he lost his job and we found ourselves with two special needs children (this was before Logan joined the Moody gang) and no insurance.

The boys needed surgery; they needed to see specialist after specialist. They needed--they needed so much. We turned to Medicaid. And while we were thankful to eventually receive the benefits for our children, and while we grumble about the coverage sometimes, I couldn't begin to tell you how often we have been stigmatized simply because our children receive this needed resource.

This is how it works when you have a child who needs services, who has special needs: you fight for Medicaid because your regular insurance won't pay for everything your kids need and you don't want your family to go bankrupt; you still amass thousands, hundreds-of-thousands of dollars, worth of bills because this procedure or that specialist isn't covered; so you finally fight for and receive Medicaid; and then you fight to find a specialist your kid can see.

It's this convoluted approach where you fight to prove your child in need of services, and then once they get those services you fight public perception about them having those services, those services that they need because of their special needs. What about public perception? How does that fit into a discussion about dentists or other doctors denying a child an appointment?

The circle of discontent

It goes something like this: you reach out, desperately, for services like Medicaid because you need every resource you can get to take care of your special needs child. Instead of seeing the need, other people--people who don't understand your very real needs--are quick to point out how lazy, how shiftless, how irresponsible you are because you can't pay for your kids' insurance yourself. You research more specialists then you ever thought possible because so many offices are strangely 'unable' to see your kid anytime this year, or they don't think they could handle having a kid with that degree of special needs to be responsible for, or because they don't take Medicaid.

The sad reality is that Medicaid as a service is utilized by millions of kids and families, millions of families struggling to find coverage for someone with special needs. And there is still a stigma attached to being one of those millions who need the benefit.

Medicaid does a lot of good.

Numbers released in February by the non-partisan Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) stated that one-third of all children and fifty-nine percent of all low-income children are covered by Medicaid or another program that insures children, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

In her 2008 testimony before Congress, Executive Vice-President of KFF Diane Rowland said that while Medicaid is known as a primary "source of health insurance coverage for millions of low-income children and parents, the program has become the largest single source of health insurance and long-term care and the largest source of public financial support for people with disabilities." [emphasis mine]

The problem is that if you or a loved one has Medicaid, though, it is harder to find an appointment when you need it, even in emergency situations. Consider that if your child has special needs, the likelihood of needing an emergency appointment rises significantly.

The difficulty of finding care if you or loved one is a patient with special needs

The LA Times article has this caveat:

There also is literature on dentists' unwillingness to treat certain populations, including young children, patients with developmental disabilities...(par 5)

While the focus in this study is on access to dental care, patients with special needs find it harder to find willing providers more often than their privately insured counterparts, according to a multitude of reports published by the journal Pediatrics (keywords "Medicaid" and "access to care") and other Medicaid reports put out by the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF).

What does this mean in the real world?

While Medicaid provides care for an overwhelming one-third to fifty-nine percent of the nation's children, and a majority of those with special needs, lingering attitudes and very real Medicaid reimbursement concerns keep many providers from offering the same access to care that those with private insurance enjoy.

The LA Times article suggested some of the underlying reasons for this, data from Pediatrics shows that the issue is much more complex than whether or not the dentist or pediatrician around the corner wants to see more Medicaid-insured patients. Other factors play a role in denying that access to care.

Those in Washington already looking at cutting Medicaid should be considering the effects of this action, and before they cut one penny, they should be addressing the underlying proclivities of Medicaid to set reimbursement rates and effect policies that make it harder for physicians to want to comply with the program.

For those of us in the special needs community, the benefits can't be over-emphasized, but that benefit is tempered by the inability to receive the coverage needed.

A final thought, not all of the problems with Medicaid stem from problems with management. Overall public stigmatism is still high among those who aren't familiar with the program. Fighting this perception of being inherently flawed because of being on Medicaid will take more than studies or changes in Washington, it will require folks to talk, openly, about the program and the benefits (as well as the drawbacks).

Those of us in the special needs community, who require the coverage extended by Medicaid, need to be proactive in helping change public perception while at the same time fighting for our kids to receive the care they need while covered under Medicaid and related services.

Chime in with your opinion: Do you or a loved one have Medicaid? How does information like this make you feel about your coverage?

If you or a loved one has special needs, have you ever been personally affected by perception or denied an appointment?

How To Invest In Art, Paintings, Limited Editions And Signed Prints

Investing in art can be a profitable way to beautify your home and your pocketbook. Your art can appreciate in value while you appreciate it hanging on your wall. Taking an active interest will help build your knowledge base of what is valuable in the art world. Here are some tips how to get started in the market.

Start by doing some research. Visit local museums and get acquainted with some of the painters. Galleries and market brochures can be very informative. Learn what kind of art and who's work you like.

Getting started can take around 10 thousand pounds or more to initially invest. Keep in mind you are buying and holding the piece, not flipping it for a quick profit as in other markets. Some may not have that kind of money to start with, so keep your interest strictly for entertainment for a while and learn all you can while you save to invest. Decide what style of painting and period of history you like. The entry point for investment level art is around 10 thousand pounds, but a trained eye can find an up and coming artist selling work for around 1000 pounds. When a painter is near the cusp of their career, there is a good chance that his 1000 pound painting will go up in value.

Find an artist with a good story. An intriguing story drives the price of his paintings up. Rarity is also a factor when it comes to value in artwork. The less copies of a work circulating around the more rare and valuable it becomes. An artist who has had proper training and mentoring will also have more opportunity for success and in turn his work will appreciate with time.

Learn the artist's financial achievements. A debut at auction can be compared to an initial public offering in the stock market. Selling at auction presents a straightforward and public valuation of the work. The best way to find out what a piece of art is worth is to find out what someone else has already paid for it. If you are interested in a painter with no auction history, try to find out how much his work goes for at galleries and other shows.

For those who can't afford an original, limited editions and signed giclee prints have leveled the playing field. A giclee, or machine made print, costs a fraction of the original and can be printed on fine paper or canvas. Certain things verify the value of a signed print. Limited editions, a controlled number of prints the artist made of the original work, can increase the value of a print. A small amount of limited edition prints are more valuable than a mass produced image. The condition of the print and whether or not it has been signed and numbered by the artist also counts toward how valuable the work is. A preceding number of a print comparable to number 8 of 80 prints is more valuable than number 75 of 80 prints.

When investing in anything always manage your risk. Whether you invest in an original piece or a signed limited edition print, do your homework, and always make sure you appreciate what you buy. That way it will always be valuable to you.

Any Appointments Left?

Some of the discussions that I have with my clients have a very general theme, that is, it's a discussion I have with lots of different clients. There are several women that come to me for a session and through our conversations it becomes very clear to me that they are at the bottom of a very large pile, sometimes their position is self imposed! Busy running around making sure that their children get to all their extra curricular activities, ensuring that their nutritional needs are carefully thought through a healthy balanced diet, that they have a school/life balance and are generally happy. Husbands and partners get slightly less attention but room is made without question that they play golf/rugby/have a boy's night out. In fact, often, where there are children, they don't even have to check who will look after the children...they can just go out, because that is what they do on a Thursday night. There sometimes isn't even a discussion about childcare!

Why is it then that women find it so difficult to make time for themselves? When asked, it's always the same kinds of responses...and it always involves the needs of the children, the partner or the parents even. So I have decided that the best way to change this habit of neglect, working on the premise that it takes 21 days to change a habit, that everyday, the goal is to make an appointment with yourself. Start off with 15 minutes, if that is all you can manage. Whether you take this at lunchtime, first thing in the morning before everyone wakes up or in the evening...its your time. It is unquestionably your time. You and all those around you, by day 21, will become used to the idea that you are worthy of your self-appointment time.

Why is it important to make space for ourselves? Because aside from anything else, when we don't do this, we are saying we are unimportant and we are teaching those around us the concept of inequality. We are saying that some people in the family/society are more important than others. Teaching those around us that we are all important is a good life skill for our children and for society as a whole. The actual personal benefits of doing this are so we are able to replenish, rejuvenate and process our thoughts enabling us to make sure that we can be intuitive to our needs. This in turn means that we feel better about ourselves, we are more likely to focus on eating well and our general sense of well being will improve. My favourite me time activities are swimming, reading and walking. So whatever it is that makes you feel more centred, book it in. Book an appointment with yourself...go on.

The Dog Days of Spring in Nova Scotia

Today I was pried out of my office chair by Mike who insisted I needed to go for a walk! The truth is, I DO need the exercise. Winter has been long and hard on me this year! Mike told me to get a flu shot, I didn't, and guess what... need I say more. After 10 weeks I am now feeling human again, and the warmth in the sun and the slow miracle of life outside the window that is Spring has been calling to me.

It was a glorious day here in Nova Scotia, the snow has almost all gone, and our favourite walking trail, which was once a railway line, is now ice free and full of spectacular vistas. There are great granite outcrops and hills deposited during the last ice age, now covered in trees and lichen, babbling brooks and roaring rivers and many fabulous fishing lakes. The railway line was cut into this landscape back around 1910 and it was no easy task. The tracks were ripped up about 90 years later when the line had become abandoned and turned into a walking trail. It is also a great place to exercise our two energetic English Springer Spaniels!

Our dogs named Hunter and Britney, are brother and sister, born in a cosy den in our basement 10 years ago to a mother and a grandmother before them, also born in our basement. We do not bred dogs to sell, but bred only to propagate our own line of cherished pets.

Hunter is a rambunctious lad with a heart of gold. For a Springer, he is very calm and would have made a wonderful hospice dog. He's a big lad with huge feathered feet, a perfect blaze down his nose and a penchant for running. As a pheasant hunting dog he's a disaster as he is always a number of counties over from where he should be, and no good to the hunter at all. He also will go where 'no other dog has gone before'. Head shaking really!

Britney is the timid one and was slated as the family non-hunting pet. A beautiful petite dog with a big heart, delicate paws and a breathing problem - she snorts. In fact, she sounds just like a pig! She also seemed on the down side of the scale when God dished out intellect. Lack of luster is what we called it! But both dogs were trained to follow voice, hand and whistle commands and she did quite well.

When Hunter was officially retired in disgrace for disobedience from hunting at the tender age of 5, Mike decided to take Britney with him in Hunter's stead - more to give 'Little Missy' some exercise than anything else. Who would have thought that she would excel in the field - certainly not us! The light switch was flicked on in her brain, her eyes started to shine, and Britney suddenly realized there was a lot more to life than being the pampered pooch. She yipped with delighted excitement and became the almost perfect little huntress, perhaps the best hunting dog Mike has ever had.

How dogs know they are going for a walk is beyond me! You can walk out of the house to the car 10 times and they will be quite happy to go with you and settle on the deck. But the moment you leave the house to go for a walk, they start yipping/snorting with excitement and roiling around your feet. Once in the car they squirm with excitement and constantly 'talk'. Little squeaks and whines - yes, and snorts - which increase in volume the closer we get to the walking trail. They know each and every bump on the road and should we not turn into the designated parking lot, there is total consternation!

The doggy crowd of hikers seems to walk mid afternoon and we have got to know many other pets by their first names. Their owners on the other hand, go nameless as probably do we. Most dogs are allowed the luxury of running loose and are only leashed when other dogs or people are coming their way.

Hunter loves to run and once given the command will take off at a high rate of speed down the banks and into the countryside hoping to flush a pheasant. If he's successful he will follow it, tree it and then get very frustrated when the bird sits there on the branch mocking him. Britney on the other hand, will walk at heel and does not venture far. Should she pick up the scent of a pheasant, her nose will go down and she starts to track it, yipping and snorting as she goes. There is a great deal of excitement all around and it is wonderful to see these dogs work. They are absolutely and completely in their element.

At this time of year the little streams and ponds are still ice covered, but the ice is rotten and crumbling away. One of our biggest fears with the dogs is that they will go running out on the ice and fall through. When there is dense bush around, the recovery would not be easy, if not impossible, so we tend not to let the dogs range too far and are constantly calling Hunter back.

You can just see him plotting his escape as he walks along the trail and although told to go left or right, he leans in the direction he'd like to take, giving us his unintended warning. He will eye the escape route and then pretend to ignore it hoping we have not noticed, then before you can blink an eye, he's gone!

Down the bank he goes like a bullet into the undergrowth, all you can hear is the breaking of twigs, branches and the tinkling of a bell. Hunter now has a bell attached to his collar so that we can monitor his movements - kinda! If he is in pursuit of a pheasant, nothing on this green and rocky earth will stop him. Dad pipping on his whistle is totally ignored. This is considered very bad doggy behavior and unfortunately now becoming a fairly regular thing.

This afternoon he did just that. Mike and I were watching him knowing that he was going to try and bolt and then the moment we let our guard down, he was gone. All we could hear was the breaking of branches and the tinkle of the bell which grew fainter as the distance got farther. Then we heard the ice break!

The countryside stood silent, Mike and I looked horrified, and Britney stood at our feet wanting to get on with the walk. What started as little pips ended up being frantic blows on the whistle - but to no avail. There was nothing we could do but listen as the vegetation was too thick to follow the dog. Silence reigned!

Then, out in the far woods, in a totally different direction came the sound of a bell. It was a long way off but coming in our direction. A couple of minutes later Hunter appeared on the trail a hundred yards away looking very pleased with himself. He was literally smiling from ear to ear! Stern words were uttered to the pooch by both Mike and I. I must admit to having been overjoyed that he was safe and sound and my stern words didn't really mean much. Hunter was put on a leash and his venturing was over for the day.

Once home and settled in the kitchen on his nice warm bed with his sister. A very tired Hunter still smiled!

Three Great Avatar Fancy Dress Costume Ideas

With James Cameron's amazing block buster movie Avatar, he really created a whole new way of looking at aliens. And one of the most fun and coolest way you can dress up for your next costume party, whether you're a men or women, or kid, is in a great avatar fancy dress costume.

The alien world of Pandora has created a wonderful place for our imaginations to explore. And for the first time the human's are the bad guys and the aliens - the Na'vi - are the good guys! Here are some ideas of how you could dress up as the good guy, Avatar-style:

1. Jake Sully full Na'vi costume

Our true hero Jake Sully is a very cool-looking character in full Na'vi avatar form. If you have the body and the courage for it then you can just strip down, wear a loincloth. And body paint yourself in the distinctive aquamarine blue with darker blue stripes of the Na'vi.

Alternatively you could make or buy a Na'vi body suit that will keep you warmer and still create the full, cool effect of a Na'vi warrior ready to run, jump, fly and fight! Don't forget the get your hair back in a ponytail. If you have short hair a wig will do the job. And of course the defining feature of the Na'vi is the tail with a furry end.

You should also try to find a spear or some sort of plastic knife to wear - no Na'vi travels unarmed. You never know when you'll need to defend yourself on Pandora, no matter how peaceful the Halloween party me seem.

2. Clothed Jake Sully

The whole body suit may be a bit much for your costume, especially if you are pressed for time in preparation. A great alternative is a kind of half and half Na'vi and normal Jake costume - basically Sully's Avatar wearing his black t-shirt with beige trousers and shirt over the top. Much easier to prepare and just as cool - but the face paint or mask, ponytail and an actual tail are still a must.

3. Neytiri costume

For all the female Avatar fans out there, there is a true treat in dressing up as the sexy, wild and dangerous Neytiri - the Na'vi Jake first meets and then falls in love with. The key to this costume is really the same as the Jake sully full Na'vi costume. You have to go all the way and wear a full body suit or very little else, and a loincloth for protection.

But the effect will be wonderful, as you become the entrancing alien. And a great wig, tail and a spear will make the image perfect.

Jewish Art Always Makes the Best Gift

Some people dread any occasion that requires them to purchase a present. They go from store to store searching for something, anything that will please the recipient. And if you're not close to the person, it can be even more of a challenge. Most likely, you end up with a gift card to a store or even a generic Visa or Amex gift card if you're desperate. However, I enjoy the time it takes to find that one special gift. In the days leading up to the event, I'm overflowing with anticipation because I know the person will love it.

When it comes to gift giving, I know you can never go wrong with beautiful Jewish art. Art in general is loved by most, but Jewish art truly is held dear by all. It is a representation of one's culture, one's spiritual beliefs and that's why it is difficult not to fall in love with something that represents your way of life. Illuminated manuscripts and other pieces of artwork can fit any occasion. The most popular and common piece of artwork is the ketubah, a gift given to newlyweds. It is a sacred marriage contract that every Jewish couple should have in their home. It's a far better gift than a check stuck in a card!

But Jewish art is also excellent for other special events like a Bar Mitzvah, a birthday, or a housewarming. You might be thinking that you don't know the first thing about art or how to design it. That is why you choose skilled artists who can take your ideas and turn them into something monumental. It's not your job to know how to design them after all. Simply speak with the artist and inform him what the occasion is and he'd be more than willing to come up with a piece both you and the recipient will enjoy.

Judaica art is a gift that requires thought and effort. First you have to find an artist and then think about colors, patterns, and blessings that you know the person will love. You can't just walk into a shop and grab a piece off the shelf! But that little bit of effort will go a long way. The recipient will be grateful you didn't opt for the boring gift card. You sought out artwork and made his home a more inviting and beautiful place.

Whether it be for Father's Day or for Chanukah, anyone would be honored and blessed to receive Jewish art as a gift.

http://www.chaimbernath.com/ features high quality Jewish art, offering a wide selection of ketubahs and other Judaica Art pieces.
