Five Great Flapper Fancy Dress Costume Tips

Few costumes have as much fun, sassy character, and style as a 1920's-style flapper fancy dress costume. They are extravagant in all the ways the real queens of the party world once were 90 years ago, and you can really let your hair down dressed as one of these party ladies.

The flappers became famous, or rather infamous, during the 1920s as a new breed of young ladies who were the rebellious party girls of the era. Wearing short skirts, short bobbed hair, smoked and drank, and listened to jazz.

Their general attitude was that of contempt for the normal behavior society expected of them, and they were often seen as the female counterparts to the gangsters of the time. They rebelled with their lifestyles - smoking, drinking, driving and having casual sex. Flappers are classic symbols of fun, and if you want to become one for the night, here are five rules you have to follow with your flapper costume:

1. Short, bobbed hair

A rule for flappers is wearing short bobbed hair - a bold statement of rebellion at the time. So get your curls up in bob, or a flapper-style wig will do just as well.

2. Cigarette holder

The iconic image of the flapper always has the cigarette and holder, held casually over their shoulder. If you don't smoke, get one anyway! You want the image at least to be complete.

3. Lots of feathers

It's all about feathers with flappers. Stick one in your headpiece, get a feather scarf. Stick feathers left right and center - the more the better.

4. Scarves

A big, beautiful, casual flapper scarf - preferably of feathers, and the same color as your dress, you can have so much fun posing with one of these draped around you.

5. Hand on hip posing

The truly convincing flapper costume is more than just the clothes. It's all about the attitude. So get your hand on your hip and slink - several hours practice in the mirror should have it just right. Remember you don't give a damn about the world and its rules. All you want to do... is party.

You can make a great flapper costume at home, without too much trouble, is you have the colorful cloth and some big jewelry to add. The feathers might need borrowing or renting, and it's rare people have a good cigarette holder lying around. But you can find everything you need in any good costume store - local or online.
