The Battle: Lead With Product OR Lead With the Business?

As long as I have been a network marketer the battle between leading with your product vs. leading with your business has raged on. Arguments on both sides of the question have valid points.

Leading with the Product
Nothing happens until product or services are sold and that's not exclusive to network marketing companies. Everyone must make a sale in order to get paid. So, leading with the product makes perfectly good sense.

By building a large following of repeat customers you build a repetitive monthly income. Becoming a product of the product makes you a walking billboard for your product or service. You, of course, are required to find and approach people who have a need to fill and an interest in what you have to offer.

Roughly 90% of all network marketing customers use the product and never intend to do anything with the business. So, it is wise to go after the larger piece of the pie.

Of course, you will want to mention to everyone that becomes a customer that there is a business opportunity or a way they could get their product or service for free simply by sharing with others. But making reference to the business is only to avoid missing those few who would consider an additional source of income. Not mentioning it is a just not good business

Leading with the Business
There are only two ways to make money to become financially secure... and having a J.O.B. (just over broke) is NOT one of them. Leverage is the way to become wealthy and independent. Leverage is the use of available assets to create a large return.

The first way to make money is to put money to work for you and live off the return on the investment. Of course this requires that you have a large sum of money to put to work for you.

The second way to become wealthy is to have people at work for you. For instance, the owner of a manufacturing firm has the benefit of hours and hours of labor performed by the company's employees, there by leveraging his or her time.

Creating a network marketing business creates leverage of the second type, people at work with you. Every time you put a business builder into your organization you leverage your time. By yourself you only have the hours you can put into your business. By adding just one person into your organization you have effectively leveraged your time by a factor of two. You've now doubled the time spent on your business.

By leading with the business the magic of the network marketing model - duplication -can be realized.

Since obviously the battle between what to lead with will continue, the best advise and the key to moving your business forward is to be flexible. Be two-headed about it. Be ready to step forward on either foot and that depends upon with whom you are talking and what's important to them.
